Busta Rhymes arrested in NY on assault charges
Is it a case of Busta Rhymes bustingheads or of NY City police trying to make the U.S. rapartist sing?Rhymes was arrested, held overnight and charged withassault over the weekend after a man accused Rhymes of beatinghim up after he spit on the rap artist’s sport utility vehicleearlier this month. But Rhymes’ lawyer questioned why police went through thetrouble of jailing the rap artist instead of simply releasinghim and ordering him to appear at his arraignment.“This was a payback by the NYPD,” Scott Leemon, an attorneyfor the artist, said on Monday. When asked what the payback was for, Leemon said, “I’mgoing to leave it at that. The point is, he should have neverbeen arrested, and if he had been arrested, he should have justreceived a desk appearance ticket (notice to appear in court).”In February New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kellycriticized Rhymes, 34, for refusing to talk to authoritiesabout the circumstances surrounding the murder of hisbodyguard.Israel Israel Ramirez, 29, was shot and killed on February 5outside a Brooklyn warehouse where Rhymes was filming a musicvideo.Rhymes, whose real name is Trevor Smith, was arrested onSaturday on suspicion of kicking Roberto Lebron repeatedly inthe head and body on August 12, sending Lebron to the hospitalwith cuts and bruises, according to the criminal complaintagainst Rhymes.Lebron said in his complaint with police that the assaultcame after he accidentally spit on Rhymes’ vehicle, accordingto a police department spokesman.Police found a knife in Rhymes’ car when he was arrested, the criminal complaint said. The arrest took place shortly after the Brooklyn nativeappeared at a New York City music festival.Rhymes was charged with misdemeanor assault, attemptedassault, harassment, and possession of a knife.
